What You Need to Know About Adoption in Kentucky

Adoption allows a couple to fulfill their lifetime dream of becoming parents. There are various benefits to adopting a child, including starting a family of your own and being able to provide a better life for a child. There are various types of adoption available, including agency adoption, relative adoption, guardian adoption, and stepparent adoption. Today, we go over what you need to know about the process of adoption in Kentucky.

Determine if Adoption Is the Right Option for You

If you are thinking about adoption, you should determine if this is the best option for you and your future. Adoption is not the right option for everyone as there are other ways to become a parent.

You will need to prepare yourself mentally, emotionally, and financially for parenthood as well as the process of adoption itself. While adoption is a rewarding experience, the process of adoption can be challenging at times.

Additionally, if you are adopting with a spouse or partner, you will both need to agree on your adoption choice and the child you would like to have.

Types of Adoption: Figuring Out What Is Best

After you have decided that adoption is for you, you will need to figure out what type of adoption you would like to pursue. The three most common types of adoption in Kentucky are as follows:

Agency adoption

An agency provides comprehensive support throughout the adoption process, including birth parent counseling and financial protection for adoptive parents. There are public and private agencies which are licensed and regulated by local jurisdictions and the state.

Independent adoption

An independent or private adoption involves a direct agreement with the birth parents and the adoptive parents. An intermediary, such as an attorney, is often a part of the process as well. Two types of independent adoptions include open adoption and identified adoption.

International adoption

You can assume the legal responsibility of a minor who is a citizen of another country by going forward with an international adoption. You will need to adhere to the laws of your home state as well as the child’s home country and obtain a visa for your child. Unfortunately, due to an increase in child abductions, international adoptions have been limited. It is best to speak with an experienced lawyer for assistance before moving forward with the process.

How to Prepare for an Adoption

Once you have decided which type of adoption you would like to pursue, you will start your paperwork, create your adoptive family profile, (if going through an agency) and complete an adoption home study. After you have been approved to adopt in Kentucky, you will be connected to expectant mothers.

The best way to prepare for an adoption is to ensure that you have all the valid documents you will need to go through the process. Also, be honest with yourself about what you are looking for in a child.

How to Complete a Kentucky Adoption

After a baby is born, the biological mother has 72 hours before giving away consent and terminating her legal right as the child’s parent. After placement, your adoption attorney and/or home study professional will help you finalize the process, which consists of post-placement visits and a final court hearing. During this hearing, a judge will grant you parental rights and the final adoption decree.
