Divorce Do's and Don'ts

Divorce can be a difficult process to navigate and mistakes that oftentimes seem minor could lead to big problems or create unnecessary obstacles on your path toward a new chapter in your life. Every couple is different and there is no “right” way for everyone to get divorced. However, there are some general do’s and don’ts anyone can benefit from while in the midst of a divorce.

Here are some helpful tips you can follow as you dissolve your marriage:

  • Clean out your closet: Throughout a relationship, people tend to accumulate many things, much of which will only end up reminding you about your ex. As you move on with your new life, these reminders will do you no good. Separate what will actually serve your interests from what will only harm you and throw away the latter.
  • Engage in some quality time with your children: Being on your own can feel overwhelming, but you need to stay focused on the big picture. If you have children, they are also probably having a difficult time coping with these new changes, so take some time to relax or play with them. You will all cherish these memories.
  • Organize your finances: Divorce will do a number on your finances because you have to suddenly look at all the details you might not have been paying attention to while you were married. Now is the time to start managing your accounts and learn anything you might have neglected when you had a partner.
  • Do not isolate yourself: This is especially true when the holidays roll around. Divorce can be a depressing experience, but you should not indulge those feelings. Plan a gathering and surround yourself with love and people who support you.
  • Do not start taking up bad habits: It is easy to let a divorce get you down and to stop caring about yourself, but you should never give up on your wellbeing. Work out, maintain a healthy diet, spend time with friends, and buy yourself clothes that make you feel good about yourself. This is just a bump in the road and you can move past it.
  • Do not go for a rebound relationship: Dating is great and you still have love to give, but you need to allow yourself some time to recover. Not only is rebounding so quickly bad for you, but it is also unfair to the potential new partner.
  • Do not blame yourself: You should not beat yourself up over your divorce. The fact is that it was not entirely your fault since it takes two to make a marriage fail. Accept that mistakes were made, but be gentle with yourself. It will not do anyone any good if you start berating yourself over something that cannot be changed.
